Recently, with the latest Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) declaration, Xiaomi’s first SUV and its second vehicle following the Xiaomi SU7 has been unveiled. The new vehicle has been officially named “Xiaomi YU7,” contrary to earlier speculation suggesting names like “MX11” or “Xiaomi SU8.” Xiaomi promptly released more official images, revealing additional details about the vehicle. According to Xiaomi’s official Weibo account, the YU7 is set to launch around June or July next year, with an estimated starting price of approximately $42,000 USD.
Design and Features
The Xiaomi YU7 closely resembles earlier spy shots, but unfortunately, the suicide doors seen on the Ferrari Purosangue did not make it to this model. From the side, the YU7 showcases a sporty coupe-style design with a sloping roofline. Its side window profile is largely inherited from the Xiaomi SU7, maintaining the visual appeal initiated by its predecessor. However, as an SUV, its bulkier body emphasizes a more pronounced waistline around the rear fenders, and the roof features a hollow-style spoiler.
Drawing from the SU7, which offered up to nine exterior color options, it is likely that the YU7 will also feature a wide range of color choices.
At the rear, the Xiaomi YU7 evolves the SU7’s horizontal through-type taillights into an inverted C-shaped through-type design, blending continuity with a heavyset SUV aesthetic.
Dimensions
The Xiaomi YU7 measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. It features a 5-seat configuration and offers three wheel sizes: 19-inch, 20-inch, and 21-inch.
Interior Highlights
While the MIIT declaration only covers the exterior, the interior design remains under wraps. However, leaked interior spy shots hint at similarities with the SU7, including a multi-functional steering wheel and a large floating central control screen.
Powertrain: Dual Motor AWD with Over 500kW Total Power
The Xiaomi YU7 features a dual-motor system, with the front motor delivering 220 kW and the rear motor 288 kW, for a total power exceeding 500 kW. Its top speed is 253 km/h, and it is equipped with a ternary lithium battery pack, although the battery capacity has not yet been disclosed.
Competition: Targeting Tesla Model Y
In the competitive electric mid-sized SUV market, the Tesla Model Y has become a benchmark for many automakers. Positioned as a mid-to-large-sized SUV, the Xiaomi YU7 aims to challenge the Model Y. With its larger dimensions, the YU7 is expected to offer more interior space, while leveraging the Xiaomi SU7’s strengths in design, performance, and integration with the Xiaomi ecosystem to enhance its appeal.
Sales: Xiaomi SU7 Achieves Nearly 100,000 Units in Half a Year
Xiaomi’s debut vehicle, the SU7, has sold over 100,000 units since its launch in March. In the past six months, it has ranked 14th in overall new energy vehicle (NEV) sales. Xiaomi recently announced that in November, SU7 deliveries surpassed 20,000 units, expressing confidence in achieving its annual target of over 130,000 units.
Factory Expansion: Phase II to Begin Production Next Year
As per earlier reports, the Xiaomi Auto Phase I factory has an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, or 12,500 units per month. With recent monthly deliveries approaching 24,000 units, Xiaomi’s production lines are operating at nearly 200% capacity.
Market Prospects
With meticulous market research, competitive pricing strategies, deep insight into consumer psychology, and abundant resources, the Xiaomi YU7 is poised to ignite the automotive market. How it performs in the future is certainly something to watch closely.
