Hot Cars | Comprehensive Upgrade! The New Mercedes-Benz G-Class G 500/G 63/G 580 to be Launched on October 18

Recently, we learned from Mercedes-Benz that the ‘New G-Class Family Night’ will be held on October 18. On that day, the new G 500, AMG G 63, and the all-electric G 580 will be available for pre-sale. These three models were already unveiled during the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. In terms of power, the new G 500 is equipped with a 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system; the G 63 comes with a 4.0L V8 engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system; while the G 580 is powered by four electric motors.

The new G 500’s exterior has undergone minor adjustments, retaining its masculine and boxy shape, a classic design language of the G-Class. The grille is adorned with horizontal bars like the current model, but the front bumper has been redesigned for a more rugged visual impact, optimizing aerodynamics and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) performance. The interior features dual 12.3-inch screens with the MBUX interactive system. In terms of power, the new G 500 is equipped with a 3.0L inline-six engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, delivering a maximum output of 330 kW and a peak torque of 560 Nm. The electric motor adds an extra 20 hp, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

The new G 63 is powered by a 4.0L V8 engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, providing a maximum output of 585 hp and a peak torque of 850 Nm, with the electric motor contributing an additional 20 hp. Its 0-100 km/h acceleration time is just 4.3 seconds. In addition to the AMG sports package, the new G 63 also offers cross-country equipment such as a roof platform and a climbing ladder, expanding its usage scenarios. The design of the side vents on the front bumper has been adjusted, replacing the open honeycomb design with fin-like decorations, and radar units have been added on both sides. The new G 63 also offers optional AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active hydraulic roll stabilization, optimizing suspension performance across off-road and highway conditions.
The interiors of the new G 500 and AMG G 63 remain largely unchanged, maintaining the design of the current models. They are equipped with the latest generation of the MBUX intelligent human-computer interaction system, a multimedia touch display, and the latest steering wheel. Additionally, more comfort features have been introduced to the new G-Class off-road vehicle, including keyless entry, temperature-controlled cup holders, wireless charging pad, heated front door armrests, and the MBUX rear entertainment system. Moreover, the new G-Class is now equipped with features such as active emergency stop assist, scene-based speed adjustment, and lane centering system for the first time.

The all-electric G 580 is equipped with permanent magnet synchronous motors on all four wheels, delivering a maximum combined power output of 432 kW (588 hp) and a peak torque of 1164 Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and the CLTC range is about 580 km. Additionally, the G 580 features G-turn (in-place turning), G-STEERING (reducing turning radius), a three-speed intelligent off-road mode, G-ROAR (sound simulation), a wading depth of 850 mm, and stability on slopes up to 35 degrees.

The G 580 features the classic round headlamp cluster, which is highly recognizable as part of the G-Class family. The grille is adorned with horizontal trim strips, which Mercedes-Benz refers to as the ‘Night Star Emblem’ grille, and the edge light strip of the grille can be illuminated. The decorative elements on both sides of the front bumper adopt a rectangular design.

On the side, the body maintains a vertical and straight design, particularly the straight roof, which highlights the rugged and square stance of the new model. The door panels feature segmented raised waistline decorations, connecting with the traditional mechanical door handles, giving the vehicle a more elongated appearance. The prominent straight lines on the lower part of the vehicle enhance the overall sense of layering, while the extended wheel arches and multi-spoke blackened wheels, combined with the black side skirts and running boards, further highlight the off-road capability.

In terms of dimensions, the G 580 measures 4624/1931/1986 mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 2890 mm. The front and rear track widths are 1638 mm and 1637 mm, respectively, and the curb weight is 3085 kg. The rear design of the G 580 closely resembles the gasoline version, with the spare tire on the rear door replaced by a storage compartment for charging accessories.

The interior of the new G 580 features black and silver trim, creating a grand visual effect. The flat dashboard incorporates a continuous digital instrument panel and central display, enhancing the sense of technology. The passenger side retains an off-road grab handle, emphasizing its rugged SUV identity. The flat-bottomed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, along with the neatly arranged physical buttons for air conditioning and gear shift, makes operation convenient.

In terms of intelligent features, the G 580 is equipped with keyless entry, the latest generation of the MBUX human-computer interaction system, temperature-controlled cup holders, wireless charging pad, heated front door armrests, the MBUX rear entertainment system, real-time off-road road imaging, and a new off-road mode interface. Furthermore, the G 580 supports ‘MANUFAKTUR’ bespoke customization services.

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class G 580 has already begun mass production at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
In terms of positioning and price, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class competes with models such as the Range Rover and Bentley Bentayga in the same segment. However, the G-Class has a unique rugged off-road style. The all-electric G-Class G 580 has few direct competitors, but in recent years, the development of rugged new energy SUVs in China has been rapid, with similar new energy models such as the BYD Yangwang U8 and the Dongfeng Mengshi 917. We will continue to follow the latest updates on this new model.
