Tesla Model Y L Launch: Bigger Size, 6-Seat Layout & Upgraded Features
Tesla, the world-renowned new energy vehicle brand, has once again sparked excitement with the official debut of the Tesla Model Y L. This isn’t just a minor facelift—it’s a precise response to family users’ needs. Compared with the existing 5-seat version, the Model Y L has grown in size, starts at ¥339,000 RMB, and is expected to begin deliveries in September.

✨ Exterior Design
The Model Y L largely retains the design language of the 5-seat version, featuring a closed-off front fascia and split headlamps. Below the headlights sits an air intake, while the trapezoidal vents on the bumper enhance its dynamic look.
A highlight is the brand-new Starlight Gold paint, joining a palette that also includes Starry Gray, Multi-Coat Pearl White, Glacier Blue, Obsidian Black, and Flame Red.
In terms of size, the Model Y L measures 4976/1920/1668 mm, with a 3040 mm wheelbase. Compared to the 5-seat version, it is 179 mm longer, 44 mm taller, and has a 150 mm longer wheelbase, elevating it from a mid-size SUV to a large mid-size SUV. These adjustments reshape side details, including enlarged rear quarter windows, wider rear fenders, and a smoother sloping roofline.

⚙️ Rear & Wheels
At the back, the Model Y L features a full-width light bar with redesigned diffused taillights, a reshaped black spoiler, and a 6-seat exclusive rear badge.
It also introduces new 19-inch aero wheels with a unique closed design, fitted with staggered tires: 255/45 R19 in front and 275/45 R19 in the rear.

🖥️ Interior & Tech
The interior design remains familiar but gains some thoughtful upgrades. The central display grows from 15.4 inches to 16 inches, paired with Tesla’s three-spoke steering wheel and screen-based gear shifting. Emergency gear-shift buttons are also added near the hazard light controls on the roof.
Convenience is improved with a dual wireless charging pad (50W + 30W), covered storage compartments, and refined details on the dashboard.

🪑 Six-Seat Layout
Inside, the Model Y L adopts a 2+2+2 seating configuration, designed for families and business use.
Front seats: integrated sport seats with adjustable headrests and leg rests.
Second row: sport seats with foldable electric armrests and recline up to 125°.
Third row: electrically adjustable backrests, linked with second-row adjustments for flexibility.
Tesla has also widened the rear cabin by 20 mm, significantly improving third-row comfort.

⚡ Performance & Range
Power comes from upgraded dual motors offering improved overall performance. More importantly, the Model Y L is equipped with an 82 kWh NCM battery from LG Energy, delivering an impressive 751 km CLTC range.
This figure surpasses all current Model Y versions and sets a new benchmark for 6-seat electric SUVs. It addresses range anxiety while offering family-friendly seating versatility.

🎯 Market Positioning
Tesla’s strategy is crystal clear. While the Model Y has already been a blockbuster—selling 30,766 units in July despite a slight dip from June—the Model Y L isn’t here to replace it. Instead, it targets a new market segment, capturing buyers who need more seats and space.
The move positions it directly against the newly launched Li Auto i8, with near-identical pricing, size, and seating layout. Tesla brings its brand strength, advanced EV control, and Supercharging network, while Li Auto leans into a family-first identity and intelligent experience. The clash is inevitable, representing a battle between tech enthusiasts and family-oriented buyers.

🌏 Tesla’s Refined China Strategy
The Model Y L launch highlights Tesla’s increasingly localized strategy in China. Rather than relying solely on global one-size-fits-all models, Tesla is now tailoring vehicles to Chinese consumer demands.
The big question remains:
👉 Can the Model Y L replicate the sales legend of its predecessor?
👉 Will it accelerate the industry trend toward six-seat pure electric SUVs?
The market will soon provide the answer.
